Dartmouth – Memories of my Home Town…..
Dartmouth – Memories of my Home Town…..(with apologies to Kingswear but I think of them as one in the same).
Kingswear, Dartmouth and The River Dart…..what a wonderful place to be raised as kids? Running wild only going home for lunch from the age of seven, messing about in boats, playing in the woods, lighting fires and cooking sausages on the beach at Mill Bay, swimming across the River Dart from Lighthouse Beach (the beach enjoyed for hundreds of years now denied to the public) to The Gunfield Hotel, mackerel fishing where the fish jumped into the boat as the porpoises chased the shoals on the incoming tide…..
We had great fun in the Scouts and Cubs…..tracking through the lanes with Bill Kelland, tying knots, summer camps on Dartmoor…..
From the age of 9, alone, by ferry, I crossed the River Dart to School – my mother having extricated me from a dysfunctional Kingswear Primary School (at the time) to be welcomed at Dartmouth Primary by the very scary Head, Miss Gregory where I joined the class of the strict but rather sweet Miss Effamy.
Too many memories to list here but a few more memories on the river – like ejecting Dave Lund onto one of the large buoys when he mutinied – refusing to row my boat! I left him for an hour while I went back to my Grandparents in Kingswear Square, for a spot of lunch. Then I remember rowing my grandmother across the river in my 8ft Pram Dingy with water lapping over the stern. Then, after a rehearsal stag night at The Boatel, and missing the last ferry home, I remember Kevin Giles acquiring a tender with a powerful engine to get us back across the river as “blue lights” flashed down through the village and we were forced to take cover, hiding in “Threepenny Hut”.
Does anyone else share similar memories?
