From “Fat B*st*rd” to “Fitness Fanatic” in 12 lockdown months…..well sort of!
So a year ago today I was 70lbs / 32kg heavier and more to the point I was doing minimal exercise – around 1000 steps a day, often less.
I am now averaging about 8000 steps – often 10,000 or 15,000 – walking every day, riding my exercise bike when the weather is inclement and we both have electric bikes which we hope to enjoy this summer.
On the one hand, suffice to say I feel transformed – fitter than I have for many years but, on the other hand that is shameful and embarrassing. Of course my BP and asthma have benefited greatly.
At the start of the pandemic lockdown in March last year, like much of the world there was a run on flour as people took to home baking to relieve the boredom. My kindly wife was turning out rich fruit cakes, chocolate sponges with butter icing, pies and quiches! A month later she decided enough was enough. She did not want me to die of covid on a ventilator as an obese asthmatic, so she inflicted a strict dietary regime on both of us. We are eating far more fish, vegetables and absolutely no processed convenience food from the supermarket.
A dietitian once said to me:
“There are fatties and there are thinnies…..and if you are a fatty at a healthy weight you are still a fatty. Meanwhile the thinnies can eat as much sugar, fat and rubbish as they like and never put on weight. It’s not fair but it’s a fact!!”
I only have to look at food to put on weight 😳
So I have some way to go – I need to lose another 3 stone / 40lbs / 20kg before I review whether I need to go further.
Please excuse this indulgence in my life of gratification for food!
I’ve made a start…..onwards and upwards.
It’s a bit like the “N” word…..since I am fat I have a right to use the word “fat”…..
