France – Thursday 31st and a good afternoon from Paris !

Driving around Paris is crazy – solid traffic with motorcycles tearing around you……mega stress!! Really, Paris is a place to follow some suggested tours but to walk or take the metro. It is by no means ideal to have a driver take you around…..way to chaotic and it takes too long to get from A to B.

Anyway…..a few photos of Paris to whet the appetite…..I’m not saying “don’t go”…..far from it, we can give you lots of ideas, but to be a success you need to launch out on your own and should be able to do some walking…..then you will enjoy it!

The Peripherique – about 2 miles or so in diameter is the beltway / ring road around central Paris – like an 8 or 10 lane Indy track with cars doing from zero to 80mph and bikes coming through the narrow gaps at 60mph while the cars are doing 30mph!! Just don’t change lane…..I’ll put some video up when I get home.

Oh well…..maybe some more about Paris tomorrow !

France – Thursday 31st – Good Morning from a rather cloudy Rouen !

The day has started !

I took a couple of photos on the Blackberry inside the amazing C13th Cathedral in Rouen – not sure how good they are? This Cathedral was mentioned in the novel “Pillars of the Earth” which inspired the building of the fictional “Kingsbridge Cathedral” widely thought to be, actually, Salisbury Cathedral in England.

Wednesday afternoon in Rouen

Rouen is a largish city in Northern France on the River Seine. The architecture is spectacular with many half timbered buildings which are many hundreds of years old. There is also a wonderful 13th century cathedral and a modern church in the shape of a fish, dedicated to Joan of Arc. The inside of the church is like an upturned boat.

Wednesday morning in Honfleur!

Honfleur is a beautiful fishing port in northern France located at the mouth or estuary of the River Seine that flows from Paris and beyond. It has a gorgeous harbour and the houses are perched precariously on the hill behind the harbor and almost look like they coud slip into the water below. Very picturesque…..I love the place!

France – Tuesday 29th – the beach at Arromanches, Mulberry Harbour, Pegasus Bridge and Caen

The Mulberry Harbour was constructed in pieces at various ports on the south coast of England, to enable tanks, trucks and heavy equipment to be unloaded.

As it happens, soon after construction there was a terrible storm which broke up the harbor but fortunately, the allies soon captured the French ports of Le Havre and Cherbourg so the damage to the Mulberry Harbor did not impair the war effort.

Pegasus Bridge was the first place in France to be liberated on the night before D-Day! British crack troops were flown in behind enemy lines, their task, to take the bridge and surrounding area ahead of the invasion to clear the way for troops landing later in the day. The bridge is on the strategic canal from the English Channel to the city of Caen.

Interesting anecdote, the owners of the restaurant next to the bridge are said to have immediately put up the sign “English Spoken” after the bridge was liberated!! Nice story?

And…..finally…..how delightful to be eating dinner by the harbour at Honfleur…..one of the nicest towns in France!

Remember Rupert Murdoch and the “Custard Pie” – its happened again, this time with Tony Blair!! Blair appeared before the Leveson Enquiry this morning and a protester appeared from behind the judge, having gained entrance to the enquiry room from the Judges private entrance !!!!! He then proceeded to give a speech saying that Blair is a war criminal!! The protester was arrested and released…..without charge!!! Apparently Blair just sat there impassive throughout!!

All a bit worrying though don’t you think??
