For those of you who know Portland, Maine…..particularly the Stroudwater area…..this is the ORIGINAL Stroudwater in Gloucestershire OLD England!!
The Stroudwater Canal or “Stroudwater Navigation” was built in the 18th Century to connect two major British rivers – the Severn and the Thames. The canal was abandoned when rail took over from canals but restoration is well underway but its a “work in progress”.
Quaint thought that someone from Stroud England ended up in Portland Maine and wanted to reminded of home so took the “Stroudwater” name with him!
