Malmesbury Abbey and the Abbey House Gardens !

I saw this carved into stone in the Abbey House Gardens in Malmesbury:

“Treat the Earth well. It was not given to you by your parents. It was loaned to you by your children!”

We need to remember that sometimes?

Welcome to Abbey House Gardens in Malmesbury – the creation of Barbara and Ian Pollard !

Welcome to Abbey House Gardens in Malmesbury – the creation of Barbara and Ian Pollard !

These exquisite gardens have been established over quite a short period, just over 20 years, but look like they have been there for ever which, in a way, they have, nestling beside the ancient Abbey House and the even more ancient Malmesbury Abbey which is over 1000 years old!

My Customers have compared them to the nearby Cotswold Garden at Hidcote and tto the Monet Garden in Giverny, France, and the opinion is that Abbey House Gardens are better than both hiidcote and the Monet Gardens.

Abbey House Gardens is also known as “The Home of the Naked Gardeners” – the owners are naturists…..but not during opening hours!! You will often see Barbara and Ian working in the garden and they are more than happy to talk to interested visitors about matters horticultural!

Leaving Cartmel in the Lake District on route to Ludlow, Shropshire…..

It still feels funny to me, having a pub breakfast in the same seat where I ate, had a pint and watched the tennis last night.

This morning we will spend some time in Cartmel which my Customers are certain is their ancestral home befor heading south to Ludlow with its famous castle.

Ended the day eating in a Shropshire country pub surrounded by people discussing grass cuttiing, farm acreage, barran cows, tractor repairs and the value of straw.

I wasn’t even in Scotchland for 24 hours…..

Its frustrating to take 7 hours to get here and then to turn around and go back again. I’m not a huge city lover but Edinburgh is gorgeous – but only on a sunny day ! The grey buildings on a grey day can be depressing but this morning it all looks wonderful.

Finishing the day with a pint (funnily enough) while watching Wimbledon.

The Return to Scotchland……

The Return to Scotchland……

The photos illustrate a nasty journey, sometimes heavy rain but right now I am sitting eating in the Shore area of Leith, which is the fishing port of Edinburgh. The two first choice restaurants, Fishers and The Shore Bar were fully booked but I am sitting outside praying that it does not pee down with rain as there is no room inside!

Now I’ve had Seafood Chowder many times in America and even in the UK but this knocked what you get at Legal Seafoods into a cocked hat!! Chunky vegetables – leak, cabbaage etc plus prawns and mussels in their shells!

…….and the entree mmmmmmmm !

What a lovely day here in the lush green Cotswolds !

What a lovely day here in the lush green Cotswolds! The church is in Long Newnton – where my daughter was married…..note the blue sundial on the tower. The view is one that I have taken many times – a favourite vista of Prince Charles – my second favourite adopted Welshman and a big sheep farmer around here…….BAAAaaaaa !
