And if you wondered where the Cheddar cheese came from….?

Cheddar cheese came from the town of Cheddar in the Mendip Hills and is now adulterated all around the world! You can still go and see the traditional methods for making cheese at the Chedder Cheese factory in Chedder, Somerset!

The Ring o’ Bells at Hinton Blewett deep in the beautiful Mendip Hills !

Its Saturday 2pm and I am having a quiet pint of Butcombe Bitter at what 30 years ago was my local pub – Ring o’ Bells, Hinton Blewett, Mendip Hills. I’d hoped they would have my favourite snack “the Hinton Blewett Special” – toast with a thick slice of ham on top, melted cheese and a slice of pineapple but I guess that’s not sophisticated enough for todays “feta cheese” and “balsamic vinigar” brigade!

Anyway, the pub had not changed much otherwise – still pretty rustic with the same old outside loos!!

I have fond memories of the pub particularly of the winters when we had heavy snow when we would trudge up the hill from Bishop Sutton and enjoy a lunch and afternoon by the fire while our socks dried out and we thawed out! In those days the pub was owned by Wadworths Brewery of Devizes and I used to love to partake of their strong winter brew “Old Timer”! After many years under private ownership, the pub is now owned by Butcombe Brewery which is located in the Mendip countryside near Bristol Airport.

By the way…don’t you love the old sign post with the Royal Mail post box behind?

Oh well, must go and call a friend currently floating around on Moosehead Lake, Maine ! The wonders of Technology!!

PS right next to the pub lives the CEO of Orange (ny cell phone service provider) – I had occasion to email him the other day because of crap customer service! Should I go and knock on his door and disturb his lunch ??

“Easy Rider”

As it was about the first sunny morning in August I decided to go for a burn-up on the moped – a 1961 NSU Quickly 49cc. Luckily we have some tiny country lanes around here as I would not want to go any distance on a main road with traffic coming up on me at about 70mph – especially as the moped only does 70mph flat out.

I shared one of these – exactly the same – when I was 15 with a friend from Kingswear – Lindsay Plummer. We bought it for £10 used it to go up and down farm tracks and when I was 16 I bought Lindsay out with a five pound note I earned from my milk round!

Soon I moved onto bigger bikes but this was great fun. My grandfather used to help me mend it when it broke down!

I am going to try taking it on a few longer journeys eventually with the idea of riding it to Kingswear from Tetbury – about 140 miles! My sore ar*e !!

Oh well….back to work! I have a customer to pick up from Bristol Airport this afternoon and I am finalising plans for three week long tours, the first starts on Monday, the next on Sunday 5th and then on 17th I have a mammoth 12 day tour of the UK – England, Wales and Scotland.

We have sheep in England too…..on the footpath from Bibury to Coln St Aldwyns !

Nicky you need to take note – one of them is even looking a little provocative but the difference is there is not a preponderance of rubber boots here !!

Actually I am across the Severn Bridge to “the valley’s” again today “boyo” (look it up!) – up into Ebbw Vale to look at some new sofas would you believe??

Anyway that could not be more of a contrast to yesterday Sunday, when I had the opportunity to take a few more photos with a decent camera on the walk with Gladys the Dog ,from Bibury to Coln Sy Aldwyns. I think I may even have found a good pub for refreshment afterwards – the Keepers Arms at Quenington which is much more typical and less ostentatious than its neighbor in Coln!
