Just a hint of Spring…..

This morning, my daughter Holly spotted these snowdrops on her way to work and she called me to tell me about them. Usually snowdrops can be found in small clumps….its quite unusual to be carpeting woodland quite like this.

Cherington is just ten minutes from my house – I popped out before breakfast and took these shots.

Matthew 21:13 “It is written,” he said to them, “My house shall be called the house of Prayer; but ye Have made it a den of theives”. …

I have been photographing the 1000 year old Malmesbury Abbey for many years now but this is what I found when I went in there today. The Abbey has been opened up to the skateboarding community. In fairness the church was full of young people, but loud music was playing and skateboards? Is it….well….”right” ??

I am really not at all sure of my feelings about this??

Is the Church opening up and welcoming new people or is it being defiled? Is it evangelising or is it sacrilegious?

Bibury – Coln St Aldwyns Map

This map shows the route from Bibury to Coln St Aldwyns alongside
a tributary of the River Thames – the River Coln joins the Thames near
Lechlade.

The red stars mark the route – notice the course of the old Roman
road – these were usually dead straight unlike the windy roads that
England is known for. There are several other Roman roads in the
area including the Fosse Way and, to the south, Watling Street.

The green dots indicate the plethora of public rights of way that
exist across private land in this country….the land owner is obliged
to maintain these paths and to insure that there are no dangers on
route – eg there should not be bulls in a field where there is
a public footpath!!

A country walk near Bibury

This is a lovely walk through private land on public footpaths and bridelways from Bibury to Coln St Aldyns. You pass Bibury Court, a Jacobian Manor House (now a hotel), through hamlets, fields and woodland to Coln St Aldwyns where there is a nice pub, the New Inn (but its not “new”). About 2 miles in all its a nice way to build up an appetite for lunch?

William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616), “King Richard II”, Act 2 scene 1

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,–
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

……………………not that I am biased whatsoever about which is the best country in the world !

Signed

Duke Robert de Little !!
