Blackthorn…..another sign of Spring !
The Blackthorn bush with its delicate white flower, which adorns many of the British hedgerows looks absolutely beautiful and is an early sign of Spring!
Although many have heard of Sloe Gin, not many know that sloes are spherical little berries, the size of grapes and very bitter to taste – they grow on the blackthorn bush. Unusually the flower on the blackthorn bush appears before the leaf whereas on its “cousin”, the hawthorn, the leaf comes before the flower. Between them, one following the other, they keep our hedgerows looking beautiful through Spring until the start of summer.
That being said, with all the rain and wind we are getting at the moment, these plants are getting a battering!!
See……I am capable of addressing issues other than BREXIT…..
